Starting in Model Year 1998, Mercedes-Benz introduced Factory Scheduled Maintenance. Generally speaking, these services are set at 1-Year or 10,000 mile intervals and go back and forth from a "Minor" (generally the "A", "C", "E...or 10,000, 30,000, 50,000 mile...) service to a "Major" (generally the "B", "D", "F"... or 20,000, 40,000, 60,000 mile...) service despite the "letter" on your Mercedes-Benz's display.
Both the "Minor" and "Major" services include but is not limited to:

First, don't panic. As long as your vehicle is not running rough, making obscure noises, or billowing smoke, you are most likely in no immediate danger.
The "check engine" light is designed to keep the driver informed of a number of sensor failures or engine irregularities. A variety of sensors feed your vehicle's computer information on everything from ambient air temperature to the amount of oxygen in the car's exhaust gasses. The vehicle's onboard computer then makes adjustments to ensure the engine is running efficiently and cleanly as possible. When one of those sensors fail, or gets a strange reading, the "check engine" light will appear.
Before bringing your vehicle in for service, there are a few solutions you can try yourself. Failing to tighten your gas cap all the way, not fully seating your oil dipstick or a loose oil fill cap can all cause the "check engine" light to flash. If you check these and the light does not go off, it is time to make a visit to your Mercedes-Benz service dealer.
If you haven't noticed any major drop in performance when the light comes on, you can most likely get away with putting if off for awhile. However, do not take too long, as the light may indicate the beginnings of a much more serious issue. Even if this is not the case, not addressing the issue will inevitably lead to a failed emissions inspection.
